celtic tiger desperation plus bizarre juxtaposition

Thanks to Ed for pretty much writing this one:

“celtic tiger desperation plus bizarre juxtaposition; Ben dunne and Christian Dior”

Dunne’s career is a story of industry in Ireland throughout the past quarter century. Like many of his generation, Dunne began working in the family business, but unlike most he eventually helped transform his father’s monument into a titan in its sector. He was forced out of the Dunne family supermarket business amidst accusations, recriminations and allegations of excess in the early 1990s. He had run-ins with paramilitaries who famously kidnapped him for ransom, was dragged through highprofile legal wrangles, was arrested with cocaine and prostitutes in Florida, and his name cropped up in tales of tribunals past tasked with looking into payments to politicians.

Dunne has three bizarre but intriguing enterprises due to come on stream later this year: an online retail service for Dublin, a warehouse-cum-art gallery, and a cemetery for dead Londoners.

BenDunneDirect. com will go online in October, and sell a yet-tobe-formalised product range directly to Dublin homes including men’s suits, jewellery, giftware, sports goods, tableware, bedlinen, toys, TVs, and digital cameras.

“This is a real long shot. If it clicks it’ll be fucking hugely successful. And if it fails, it won’t break me. If it works I’ll attract the best people [to run it] and offer them equity.”
